Medicine as a discipline of attention
Medicine began as an act of attention. A physician sat with a person, listened with discipline and curiosity, and brought the full weight of their training to a single question: what is actually happening here, and what does this particular person need?
Somewhere along the way, that act of attention became a liability. Systems built for volume replaced it with throughput. Protocols written for populations replaced it with checklists. The physician — once a trained navigator of human complexity — was gradually recast as a gatekeeper, a referral node, a documentation engine.
You have probably felt this from the other side of the exam table. The fifteen-minute visit. The referral handed over before your question was fully answered. The sense that your complexity was being routed around rather than engaged.
That isn’t medicine. That’s processing.
Thrive exists to restore the original thing.
What we actually do
Thrive is a physician-founded adult primary care practice that operates entirely outside the insurance system. That single structural choice is what makes everything else possible.
When a physician’s time and judgment are no longer rationed by a third-party payer, the appointment can be as long as the problem requires. The thinking can go as deep as the case demands. Nothing is rushed to fit a billing code, and no question gets deferred because the clock ran out.
We don’t triage you toward the exit. We don’t reach for a prescription before we understand the problem. We work to understand your physiology well enough that you understand it too — because a patient who genuinely understands their own body is the most powerful force in their own care.
This is conventional internal medicine, practiced rigorously and without shortcuts. Not a wellness program. Not a supplement line. Not a coaching service. Medicine — the way it was meant to be practiced.
Our approach
Most physicians are trained to find a diagnosis and match it to a treatment. That works for a great deal of medicine, and we use it fully — rigorous conventional evaluation is always the foundation, never skipped.
But for the patients who don’t fit the template — those carrying diagnoses that don’t quite explain things, or concerns that have been repeatedly minimized — a label is not the finish line. Dr. Medeiros commits to something harder: to sit with a whole person, understand the full picture, and help that person navigate their own health with clarity, confidence, and as little unnecessary intervention as possible.
The goal is not simply to name what’s wrong. It’s to help you build a working understanding of how your own body operates — until you can own it.
About Dr. Mary Medeiros
Dr. Mary Medeiros trained in Internal Medicine because she has always been drawn to complexity — to the patients and problems that don’t resolve into a tidy answer. She holds both an MD and an MPH, a combination that shapes how she thinks: about the individual in front of her, and about the broken system that individual has had to navigate to get here.
She built Thrive because she refused to practice medicine any other way. After years inside a system that rewards volume over understanding and treats the physician-patient relationship as an inefficiency to be optimized away, she set out to build the practice she believed her patients deserved — and that physicians deserve to be able to offer.
Her clinical philosophy is distinctive. Rather than treating the body as a static structure to be fixed, she approaches it as a set of interacting, dynamic processes — applying a proprietary method to understand where these processes may become obstructed and devising a plan to help them realign. Rigorous evidence-based medicine is applied at the forefront, but her expanded approach takes over where conventional evaluation may run dry. Throughout, her measure for success is not whether a diagnostic label is found, but whether you have come to understand your own physiology well enough to take genuine ownership of it.
She is, in the oldest and most complete sense of the word, a personal physician.
